The first chapter tells where douglass was born ; Talbot County, Maryland. there douglass didn't know much of nothing at all. the only thing he knew was the fact that he was a slave and had been separated from his mother shortly after birth. on a various of occasions he got to see his biological mother before she passed several years later. douglass meets his first master in Talbot County also, Captin Anthony.
In chapter two , Douglass lives on Central plantation owned by colonel Lloyd. The overseer of this plantation is Mr. Servere but douglass remembers him passing away and Mr. Hopkins replacing him. All of the slaves there including young Douglass refers to the plantation as "Great House Farm" . they feel as if this plantation is one of the least stressful plantations there are.
Chapter three and four ... Douglass is still unwillingly at " Great House Plantation" but a bit has changed. The second overseer at Captain Anthony's, Mr. Hopkins is fired after only a short time and is replaced by Austin Gore. Douglass does not like this overseer because he sees that he likes to provoke other slaves to rebel for an excuse for him to punish them. One of douglass's memories about Mr. Gore is whipping and shooting dead a slave by the name of Demby because he felt as if the slave was a bad example for other slaves.
In chapter five douglass begins to feel more hope into being a free human one day. the fact that douglass is still a child he can't really work in the fields like the adults so on his free time he is nice enough to accompany Colonel's grandson Daniel. Daniel and Douglass eventually become friends which gives douglass an advantage of being one step closer to freedom. At the age of seven or eight douglass is chosen to go live in Baltimore with Captin Anthony's son in law's brother Hugh Auld.
In chapter 6, Douglass is satisfied with his new family in Baltimore. His mistress by the name of Sophia Auld was extremely kind to douglass. with douglass being her very first slave she's not cruel like others. Mrs. Auld begins to teach douglass the alphabet and words. Hugh Auld eventually finds out and orders mrs. auld to stop immediately. Slave owners feel that educations ruins slaves and makes them unhappy. Douglass now already knows enough to understand the position he's in and now has a better thought of becoming free one day.
In chapter seven ,over the years Mrs. Auld becomes cruel following the rules of being a slaves mistress. That behavior from her doesn't stop douglass's determination to become smarter so that one day he can be free. one day douglass gives bread to a group of boys in exchange to give him reading lessons. later down the line douglass purchases a book called the The Columbian Exchange. This book was basically a documentary on a master and a slave which opened his eyes on a lot of things he was blind to in the past
In Chapter 8, Douglass old master Captain Anthony dies. Douglass returns to his old plantation to be appraised among other slaves. Douglass really does not want to leave Baltimore because ever since his been there he feels that he's getting closer and closer to where he wants to be. Luckily douglass is assigned to Mrs. Lucretia Auld, who sends him back to Baltimore . Soon after Lucretia Auld Master Andrew both die. Douglass shortly after is shipped back to Maryland. during the time douglass is smart enough to remember certain routes they took to get from one place to another. at this point douglass is ready to escape at any given opportunity.
In Chapter 9, Now that douglass is back to Baltimore, he stays with Thomas Auld. The douglass is miserable because him and other slaves don't get a fair amount of food. Douglass feels that Thomas Auld's cruelness comes from being married into the slave owning life. Even though doulass had another unfair owner, his smarts advantaged his mind to let auld's horse run away on purpose many of times just to go eat a full meal at the neighborhood farm. After a while, Auld rents Douglass to Edward Covey for a year to "Break" douglass. Douglass is okay with going because he knows he will be fed more than he is at Thomas Auld's residence.
Chapter 10 Douglass arrives at Covey's farm. It was not much of what he expected at all. Slaves were ordered to work in the fields all day, and being that this is douglass's first time actually working in a field.. he failed to complete a few tasks not being used to field work. Covey began to get a bad eye for douglass and decided to punish douglass by whipping him weekly. Douglass did not feel good about his situation at all. His whole personality changed when he got to Covey's Farm because he was treated so harsh. Douglass went through tough times on that farm from him passing out to him being beat for no reason. Covey got the best of douglass one day so douglass felt the need to defend hiself to thhe point where Covey NEVER touched him again... after douglass's year is up at Covey's farm, he is sent to live with Mr. William Freeland. Freeland wasn't as cruel an he treated them fair. there douglass made friends and was kind enough to get other slaves interested in learning how to read. Even though this is against slave law douglass's heart is big enough to take the risk of other slaves education. Douglass felt that it was necessary to let his friends in on his escape plan/dream. unfortunately his plan was betrayed, took to jail, and sent back to Baltimore with Hugh auld. Douglass immediately begins working but this time, its for wages (to receive something in return).
In the final chapter, douglass has the same mindset, just smarter and stronger. The ending of this book is not the ending of his journey, he explains to us that its only the beginning of his escape. During this time in the novel, Auld eases up on douglass because his senses that douglass is soon to escape so he gives douglass a fair share of his wages. Frederick Douglass feels that he should work for his on wages and asks Thomas Auld. Of course he refuses the first time because douglass is fresh on being known for the slave that is eager to escape. Douglass decides to wait a couple months down the line to ask Hugh Auld.. Hugh Auld surprisingly agrees with an old tamatum which repremends douglass to pay him three dollars a week. Douglass is okay with this because he knows soon he will be on his way to freedom. Douglass worked hard and proud because his date of escape was approaching which was September third. Douglass eventually follows through with his plan and escapes to New York City. Douglass did not have it easy... he was homeless , foodless, and moneyless with no one there familiar to him. He felt alone until a black man by the name of David Ruggles takes him in and encourages him to get on his feet. Douglass is appreciative. He eventually meets the love of his life Anna Murray (a free black women). They both move to New Bedford to start their free lives. Douglass is happy and works in miscellaneous jobs for a couple years until he makes enough to subscribe to the Liberator ( an abolitionists magazine). Douglass also succeeded in public speaking about what he went through and began to strive throughout the rest of his life...
